The 7th Week of Ordinary Time, Year B

The Roman Catholic Parish of St Mark’s Ipswich includes Chantry, Stoke, Capel St Mary, Holbrook and also Brantham where Holy Mass is celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church.

The Parish Priest, Fr. Christopher Smith is assisted by Fr. Pàdraig Hawkins.

Masses are well attended and it is particularly good to see so many young families. Everyone is welcome so please come along. If you are new to Ipswich we look forward to meeting you.

Sunday 15/01/2012
Jenny Newing, St Mark’s Parish Coordinator for the APF is presented with her long service certificate by Rev Deacon Christopher Brighten the Diocesan Secretary for the APF and Fr Christopher Smith Parish Priest of St Mark’s.

Wednesday of this week is Ash Wednesday. A day of fasting and abstinence. The beginning of Lent when ashes are applied to our forehead in the sign of the cross and the Priest says the words; "Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return" It is a reminder that this life is short and merely a foreshadowing of what we shall become through the redemption of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The ashes for Ash Wednesday normally are made from blessed palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. The ashes are sprinkled with Holy Water and incensed before distribution.

The Stations of the Cross

Each Friday during Lent, The Stations of the Cross will be celebrated in St Mark's church at 11:15, in place of the Rosary.

What are "The Stations of the Cross"? For Catholics throughout the world, they are a very important type of Prayer and Devotion, one which is synonymous with Lent, Holy Week, especially Good Friday. This devotion is also known by the titles "Way of the Cross", "Via Crucis", or "Via Dolorosa".
